Public Criticism Of Gary Ezzo: Does it Violate Matthew 18?

by Frank York

Gary Ezzo and his followers frequently suggest that if a person has a criticism of Ezzo or his teaching materials, the critic is biblically mandated to go through the Matthew 18 process to resolve the dispute.

Joan Grosser, the head of Growing Families Australia, for example, strongly implied in an email to a mother that she should travel to South Carolina to visit with the Ezzos to express her concerns. Grosser's comment is posted on Parents Place. Grosser urged a "Matthew 18" approach with Gary Ezzo.

Matthew 18, however, has no application to a public leader and his public writings. Matthew 18 deals with personal concerns between two individuals-and is usually conducted within the confines of a church. The person who feels he has been sinned against is urged to confront the person privately. If this fails, he is to bring a witness. If this attempt fails, the next step is to bring it to the church. If the person continues in sin, he is to be publicly rebuked and may be excommunicated.

This is the process that Living Hope Evangelical Fellowship was going through with Gary Ezzo when he fled from the church.

Gary Ezzo continually demands that people who are critical of him go through a Matthew 18 process, but he is unwilling to submit himself to such a process-even from his own pastor and elders when he is confronted about his sins.

The Living Hope excommunication of Gary Ezzo is not the only disciplinary process Ezzo has gone through. He faced a similar situation at Grace Community Church. In addition, numerous individuals over the years have gone privately to Gary to confront him over his sinful behavior. He has repeatedly rebuffed these efforts. Kathleen Terner and Elliot Miller have documented several of these cases in "A Matter of Bias?: Examining the Response of Growing Families International Criticism."

Many individuals have attempted to go through the Matthew 18 process with Gary-even though this does not apply to public leaders whose materials are widely distributed. Yet, in the interest of going the extra mile, pastors, elders, critics, and friends have attempted this process.

What does apply to Gary Ezzo and other rebellious Christian leaders and false teachers is 1 Timothy 5:19-20, which states: "Do not entertain an accusation against an elder unless it is brought by two or three witnesses. Those who sin are to be rebuked publicly, so that the others may take warning." In short, Gary Ezzo is to be rebuked publicly.

Ezzo Uses Meetings To Dodge Accountability
Gary Ezzo uses reconciliation meetings as a way of confusing his critics and avoiding true accountability. In mid-1995, for example, Ezzo met with the elders at John MacArthur's Grace Community Church. In this meeting, these men confronted him over his pattern of dishonesty and lack of accountability.

In this gathering, Ezzo assured the elders that he was going to rectify their concerns. Instead, he began a quiet campaign against those who had raised concerns about his materials, resigned as an elder at Grace, and then withdrew from the church altogether.

In response to Ezzo's actions, the elders at Grace Community Church issued a public statement disavowing any connection to Ezzo and pointed out significant character problems and unethical conduct by Ezzo in his dealings with the church.

You can read Grace Community Church's statement about Gary Ezzo here:
"A Statement Regarding Gary Ezzo and Growing Families International (October 16, 1997).

After this public statement was posted on the Internet, Gary met with one of the elders at Grace and assured him that he was making himself accountable to the pastors and elders at Living Hope Evangelical Fellowship.

Taking Ezzo at his word, this Grace elder then revised and shortened the Internet statement and removed comments about his character problems. According to a subsequent statement issued by Grace, however, Pastor John MacArthur noted: "After the revised statement was issued, however, Mr. Ezzo made no further attempt to address the larger concerns we had raised about his personal character."

In short, Gary Ezzo had misled the elders at Grace Community Church-and issued his own statement mischaracterizing the discussions that took place with the Grace elders.

Grace Community Church then issued another Internet statement about Ezzo after he fled from accountability at Living Hope. You can read this statement here: John MacArthur Comments On Gary Ezzo's break with Living Hope Evangelical Fellowship.

Gary Ezzo attempted to spin himself out of this dilemma in an interview he gave to Christianity Today. His comments, of course, are filled with lies and half truths. Here is Gary's response to questions from the editor of Christianity Today: On the Record: Gary Ezzo - Christianity Today Magazine.

Resources On Matthew 18
We have provided the following links below to show that Gary Ezzo's use of Matthew 18 is invalid and unbiblical. A Christian leader who has published materials in the public domain, can be freely criticized and rebuked for his sins or heresies. No one has to attempt a Matthew 18 process to criticize someone like Gary Ezzo.

The fact is that Gary Ezzo has fled from accountability from two churches, has rebuffed repeated efforts by critics and former friends who have attempted a Matthew 18 process, and is currently operating as an unaccountable "Christian" leader. He can be openly and repeatedly criticized and condemned for his behavior. In fact, it is the duty of Christians to condemn and expose corruption within the church-especially corrupt leaders who should be held to far higher standards than are regular church attendees.

Ezzo Dropped by Multnomah, Begins Self-Publishing

By Frank York

Ezzo Loses A Lucrative Contract
With Multnomah But Creates A Vanity Press
On September 12, 2001, while the nation was still in shocked horror at the terrorist attacks upon the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, a Christian publishing company in Oregon posted a small notice on its web site.

The notice announced that Multnomah Publishing was returning publishing rights to self-styled parenting expert Gary Ezzo, author of such bestselling books as On Becoming Babywise and On Becoming Babywise II. *

Although Mr. Ezzo was one of Multnomah's A-list authors, the publisher decided to drop him as an author after an internal investigation was conducted of claims of medical misinformation in his books as well as serious character problems involving him.

Apparently, in an effort to protect itself from potential legal liability for publishing medically inaccurate information, Multnomah announced its decision to drop Ezzo in carefully nuanced and vague terms.

The statement blamed Mr. Ezzo's critics for being unwilling to meet with Ezzo at a "reconciliation" meeting hosted by Multnomah officials. The statement gave the impression that the critics' refusal to meet was the reason that Multnomah decided to drop him as an author. This is a nonsensical explanation.

In addition, his critics had made it perfectly clear to Multnomah in an Open Letter why they would not meet with Ezzo. They pointed out that Ezzo frequently uses meetings of this kind as a public relations ploy to claim that his critics are unreasonable and unwilling to "reconcile." He used this ploy with Grace Community Church leaders after they publicly rebuked him several years ago.

The Multnomah statement noted: "While Mr. Ezzo has done everything we asked him to do, both Mr. Ezzo and Multnomah believe the process has gone as far as it can. Having come to that point, Mr. Ezzo and Multnomah mutually agreed to return the publishing rights back to the author." Again, this is a nonsensical statement.

As a former book editor and as the author of 12 books over the past 20 years, I can say with certainty that no rational publisher would drop an author simply because critics of his materials refused to meet with him for a "reconciliation" meeting.

Publishers thrive on controversy. What they do fear, however, are factual errors in their books--which could lead to costly lawsuits. Medical errors involving newborn infants would be especially troublesome for a reputable publisher.

The more plausible reason that Multnomah dropped Ezzo was hinted at by Jeff Gerke, a former editor at Multnomah who had conducted the investigation into the charges against Ezzo. The decision to drop Gary had been made as early as March, 2001 when Multnomah Vice President Kyle Cummings called Ezzo and told him of the decision. After gathering information on Ezzo from his critics, several of Gerke's emails were leaked to Christianity Today. In one of those emails, Gerke said: "I'm personally convinced Gary Ezzo and his infant care materials are dangerous. He has no medical training and therefore no business writing medical books--or disregarding the advice of bona fide medical professionals."

To be fair, pediatrician Dr. Robert Bucknam is listed as a co-author of Babywise, but his name was added only after the content of Babywise had been written in a religious version known as Preparation for Parenting. Bucknam had been in practice as a pediatrician only one year after his residency when Ezzo added his name to the book. The advice given in Babywise is almost universally condemned by the majority of pediatricians, pediatric organizations, and by lactation experts.

Jeff Gerke admitted in one email that Multnomah had no medical editor to review Ezzo's medical information. Gerke was originally an Ezzo partisan at Multnomah, but as he continued to investigate the charges against Ezzo, he changed his mind and submitted a brutally honest report to Multnomah leaders. In an email leaked to Christianity Today, Gerke told Ezzo critic Dr. Matthew Aney: "We weren't really feeling the need to do an 'unbiased investigation'," said Gerke. "We were just trying to field complaints. I think we started the investigation merely so that we could say that we'd truly looked into it. We believed we would find verification for Gary's explanations. We believed we would put out a statement and go our merry way." Gerke lost his job at Multnomah shortly after his emails were published in Christianity Today.

When Ezzo was contacted by Christianity Today in March, 2001 to get a comment from him about Multnomah's impending decision to drop him, he refused to discuss the publisher's decision. Yet, on September 12, 2001, a day after the worst terrorist attack in our nation's history, Multnomah announced its decision to drop him. If not deliberate, the timing of the publication of this statement was certainly helpful in minimizing public attention.

Ezzo Creates Two Paper Organizations For His Vanity Press
After losing his contract with Multnomah, Ezzo dropped his incorporation of Growing Families International in California and re-established this for-profit organization in Missouri. He also formed two paper front groups called Charleston Publishing Group, Inc., and Parent-Wise Solutions, Inc. These two organizations exist as legal entities on paper but not as real publishing companies. They are both listed as "Fictitious Name Registrations" in Missouri.

According to records from the Missouri Office of the Secretary of State, all three of these Ezzo groups were established on February 28, 2002.

Ezzo's self-publishing venture, known as a "vanity press," is Charleston Publishing Group and Parent-Wise Solutions. Parent-Wise is billed as a "division" of Charleston. Both list their "corporate" address as Gary Ezzo's former home in Chatsworth, California. The Ezzos sold this home in early 2003, having moved to Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina in August, 2002.

By the time he was moving his operation to South Carolina, Ezzo was operating GFI out of his garage in Chatsworth, California and had only one employee. GFI had approximately 35 employees in 1998 and operated out of an office and warehouse complex in Simi Valley, California.

Growing Families International, Inc., lists Gary Ezzo as the President of GFI and his wife as Secretary, according to the Missouri Secretary of State's Annual Registration Report dated April 3, 2003. Gary and Anne Marie are also listed as the only two Board Members of GFI. This, of course, gives them total control over the organization and no accountability for how funds are spent--reinforcing longstanding concerns about accountability that have been raised by critics of his operation. (Although GFI is clearly a for-profit company, Ezzo continues to refer to it as a "ministry" in his published materials. The GFI web site article, "How did GFI get started," for example, refers to GFI as a ministry.)

Parent-Wise Solutions Listed As Division Of A Larger Company
In the 2001 "revised and updated" edition of On Becoming Babywise, the copyright page states that "ON BECOMING BABYWISE" is published by Parent-Wise Solutions, Inc., and notes further down on the page: "Parent-Wise Solutions, Inc. is a division of the Charleston Publishing Group, Inc." As noted earlier, both are legal entities on paper but do not exist as real publishing companies like Multnomah-with buildings and personnel.

In the "Acknowledgment" in the 2001 edition, Gary Ezzo notes: "This edition not only reflects advancements over previous editions, but also the work of a new publisher, Parent-Wise Solutions, Inc. Overall, this edition brings the same message, but better said."

A typical reader of this sentence could reasonably conclude that Parent-Wise Solutions, Inc. is a separate entity from Gary Ezzo or Growing Families International. This message is also promoted on the Parent-Wise Solutions, Inc., web site. The introductory statement on the site says: "Parent-Wise Solutions provides parents with practical principles for raising children from birth through the teen years. Our heritage includes the acquisition of five of the most popular titles in all of contemporary parenting. [Emphasis added.] Influenced by our authors, are over two million households and 4 million children, in more than 25 countries."

By stating that Parent-Wise Solutions, Inc., "acquired" five Ezzo books, the reader is again led to believe that this company is separate from Ezzo himself. The truth is that his former publisher dropped him and returned the publishing rights to him. The fact is that Parent-Wise Solutions IS Gary Ezzo.

Orders for Parent-Wise Solutions, Inc. books are handled through a sales group in Sisters, Oregon, called Hawksflight and Associates. This company is run by Blake Weber, a former Multnomah sales representative who is also an Ezzo partisan. Weber is the nephew of Multnomah Vice President Eric Weber and is the son of Christian book author Stu Weber.

In short, Ezzo's vanity press is being presented as a division of a larger publishing company, which doesn't really exist-except on paper-with the Missouri Secretary of State's office.

There is nothing inherently wrong with self-publishing, but Gary Ezzo seems to have gone out of his way to hide the fact that his former publisher dropped him after investigating both the medical misinformation and character issues surrounding his books.

Likewise, the wording on his copyright page and acknowledgment in the 2001 edition of On Becoming Babywise and on the Parent-Wise Solutions, Inc., web site lead a reader to think that this is a real publishing company-and part of a larger company known as Charleston Publishing Group.

Caveat Emptor!
Purchasers of his books have the right to know that his "publishing companies" are merely paper facades that hide his self-publishing efforts-and his inability to acquire a reputable publisher for his questionable theological and medical advice.

What should this mean to potential purchasers of his books? It means that Gary Ezzo now has far less accountability for accuracy in his books than he ever had before. If Multnomah dropped him over concerns about medical misinformation in his books, potential customers should heed the warning: Let The Buyer Beware!

*United Press International's Booklist published on October 26, 2001, listed Babywise as the Number 3 bestseller under the Trade Paperback category.

A Personal Encounter with Gary Ezzo

by Allison Hilbig

This is an account of a conversation that took place in 1997. I typed it up within a day of the encounter.

Background: I was teaching Christian Childbirth Education and the wife of the pastor of the church where I was teaching handed me a GFI brochure and asked if I had heard of this group and what my opinion was.

The brochure looked okay - nicely presented. While my first thought was that anything about "Growing Kids God's Way" would surely be a good program, I somehow felt like Superman had just been handed a piece of kryptonite! I had such a gut-wrenching, sickening and weakening spiritual reaction to this brochure that it alarmed me. I have a strong gift of spriritual discernment but I had never had such a strong spiritual reponse.

The response was enough to make me decide to investigate this organisation further and find out why the Spirit of God had moved me that way. I was on an email list of Christian childbirth professionals so I asked if anyone had heard of this group. I was directed to numerous websites where I discovered the amount of controversy surrounding this "ministry." I was alarmed at just how much criticism was coming from well-respected Christian groups and individuals.

I contacted the Australian headquarters of GFI and asked about this controversy. They invited me to attend a leaders' information session which would "help me understand." The particular day of the information session I had other commitments but I made sure I was able to attend the question/answer session.

I sat and listened to Gary Ezzo speak until he asked for questions. I raised my hand immediately but it was some time before he finally responded to me. I stood up and we had the conversation related in detail below.

Gary seemed surprised and unprepared for my questions. Obviously he has heard these accusations back home but since GFI was new in Australia he seemed unprepared for any
criticism on this day.

I was actually surprised how long Gary continued the debate - I expected to be asked to be quiet, sit down or leave much earlier in the conversation. Yet he kept the debate going. I was prepared for the debate to turn into a personal attack on me - which it did - so I was able to keep the conversation going for some time. I left feeling confident that I had accomplished my goal of planting a small seed of doubt in the minds of those present.

Afterwards, I walked out to my car and was followed by a woman who was visibly disturbed by what had just taken place. She came and sat in my car and I shared with her for the next 45 minutes! I gave her a copy of all the information I had found so far.

Interestingly, I never gave my name when I spoke that day, but I later discovered that my name had somehow been circulated to other churches starting up GFI programs. I learned that Gary had written about our encounter in a letter, describing how I had left in tears after making a fool of myself! A similar version of our encounter was related to a woman from my church by someone at a third church--not my church and not the host church of the Ezzo workshop!--along with the additional detail that this was on a tape of the session! I was very interested and asked for a copy of this tape, but it was not forthcoming.

In truth, I had left calmly and confidently - unshaken and undisturbed by what had taken place, and with sense of accomplishment that I had alerted this group of pastors and leaders to be careful of the teachings of this organisation. Never once did I cry. I felt very much at peace. In fact I was trying not to smile when I left because I did feel I had accomplished my goal: to add just one small seed of doubt in the minds of the people there!

The next day I typed out my recollection of the conversation that took place:

Allison: Obviously the huge popularity of GFI in America indicates the enormous need for parenting education over there, and I'm sure that the need would be just as great in Australia. No one would question the need for parenting programs. My question is: why should we use your program when I have 97 pages of articles from Christian organisations and health professionals expressing their concerns about the material in your program.

Gary: Honey, honey, you have no idea what you are talking about.

Allison: Why is it that some Christian groups will not endorse it and even your former church where you were a pastor will no longer endorse your material and will no longer use it within the church?

Gary: Honey, that material has been in the church for the past 12 years - so don't tell me it won't still be used.

Allison: Why did your church release a public statement to say it would not endorse your material and if I can quote from it: "Gary Ezzo is prone to ....."

Gary: That was all politics. You know why they said that - because they're jealous. Because I'm over here ministering and they don't want me to be.

Crowd: Mmmm, yeah.

Allison: Why do you go against well acccepted medical research?

Gary: You're an attachment parent La Leach Leaguer aren't you? You are, aren't you? Aren't you? See that's what they do - they send in one of their people to ...

Allison: Excuse me, but we don't even have La Leche League over here.

Gary: Well then what do you have?

Allison: We have the Nursing Mothers Association and NO I am not a member of that. Why are you unable to back up any of the claims you make in your manuals? Where is the evidence to support your claims?

Gary: It's all there sweetheart. It's all there if you want to look at it.

Allison: Oh really - well I'd love to - can I see it please. I know there are many other people who would love to see it.

Gary: And where are you children right now?

Allison: I don't think that's any of your business.

Gary: See, everyone, she doesn't even have children of her own.

Crowd: Typical, ha.

Allison: Excuse me, but I do - I have 2 children.

[This was true in 1997; today Allison has 4 children--ed.]

Gary: And how old are they?

Allison: Is that any of your business?

Gary: How old are your children?

Allison: Does it make a difference?

Gary: How old are you children?

Allison: They are 5 and 2.

Crowd: Yeah well. Ha. Gee - what would she know.

Gary: And does anyone look at your children and comment on how well behaved they are? Do people ask you how you've parented them? No, they don't, do they?

Allison: Well actually they do. Many people have commented.

Gary: Oh... well ... that's good. But do you have an international ministry? Do you - no!

Allison: No I don't - but perhaps I will in 20 years time. I don't know! Why are other Christian organisations concerned about your methods?

Gary: Yeah who - name one.

Allison: Well - why did Christianity Today publish an article expressing their concerns.

Gary: Christianity Today? That was a joke. Just a joke.

Allison: Why has this material caused division in churches?

Gary: Yeah - you name one. Go on - you name one church.

Allison: It's all in here.

Gary: Name it, go on - we're waiting. See, you can't, can you.

Allison: Look, I don't recall the church. I don't know the name of any of your churches. But's it's in here and if anyone wants to read this I'd be quite happy to get you a copy.

Gary: You're an attachment parent, aren't you? You've demand fed your babies, haven't you? You're ashamed of it, aren't you? You are, aren't you? Go on - admit it - you're ashamed you've demand fed...

Allison: Excuse you - you've just asked me a lot of questions - can I have an opportunity to respond please?

Gary: Sure.

Allison: I parent my children in the way that God parents us.

Gary: Oh yeah - and what would that be?

Allison: In love and discipline. To nurture and train them - to disciple them.

Crowd: Well, what do you think he does? That's what he does too.

Gary: Right - that's what we do too.

Allison: Then why are so many people concerned about your methods?

Gary: And how do you know this? Have you talked to these people?

Allison: Yes I have.

Gary: Oh ... you've talked to them?

Allison: So why are ...

Gary: Yeah well name one - go on you name one person.

Allison: Look, I can't think of anyone in particular off the top of my head. Again - it's all in here.

Gary: See you don't know do you.

Allison: Okay - xxxxxxxxx is one.

Gary: Anne Marie - how many times have we corresponded with xxxxxxxxx?

Anne Marie: About 6 times.

Gary: And Anne Marie, how often have we invited xxxxxxxxx to speak with us - and she refuses?

Anne Marie: Each time.

Gary: See ...

Allison: Yeah - you write to people but you beat around the bush - you won't directly answer their questions will you?

Crowd: Sit down.

Allison: Look, I am happy to leave if you wish.

Gary: Have you been here the whole time?

Allison: No.

Gary: So you just came along to this session.

Allison: That's right.

Gary: So you came just to cause trouble.

Allison: No, I came to inform everyone here that there are concerns about this material and it has caused problems in America.

Crowd: Listen, we came here to hear the Ezzos - not something you found on the internet.

Allison: Look I'm leaving. You've been warned - just be really careful - and check this out first. I'm going.

I am so glad that I made the effort to "meet" with Gary Ezzo - reading the material is one thing but coming face to face with him is another thing altogether. You need to "speak" with him to
really appreciate where this man is coming from and why there are so many integrity issues.

Watch Your Baby's Signs of Hunger

Although Babywise says to feed a hungry baby, it usually instructs parents to observe a time interval between feedings, or a certain order of events, such as only feeding the baby after she wakes up. There's another way to tell that your baby is hungry. You can watch your baby for her own signs of hunger.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends watching for the following early signs or cues by which your baby lets you know when she's hungry.

  • Small movements as she starts to awaken
  • Whimpering or lip-smacking
  • Pulling up arms or legs toward her middle
  • Stretching or yawning
  • Waking and looking alert
  • Putting hands toward her mouth
  • Making sucking motions

Our first child was born in the summer of 09, and I promptly began trying to apply the Babywise method. The book had been highly recommended by a distant relative, and promised structure and sanity amidst the exhaustion and upheaval I felt as a new mother. However, our baby did not respond the way the book promised he would if we followed the schedule. All my attempts to adhere to the book led to deep frustration, arguments with my husband (who knew better than to let a book dictate our newborn's schedule), feeling like a failure, and the worst--resentment of my infant. Why couldn't he sleep and eat like the book said he should be doing? The Ezzos presented their arguments as infallible.
